Safe Choices Program
The safe choices initiative engages in sexual reproductive health demand generation awareness and referral activities, aimed at improving health seeking behavior. Community outreach activities are organized in partnership with the county officials and referrals made to the health facilities.
The safe choices program has interventions in schools in Tongaren constituency of Bungoma County. The target is for the over 2,500 children between 8 – 14 years to be able to complete primary school by reducing incidences of school drop out as a result of pregnancy or unsafe abortion. The interventions to date have included;
I) Mentorship program: Talk with me sessions organized between professionals from different fields with the students and motivating them to stay in school. The mentorship program in Tongaren Sub-County is aimed at increasing the transition rate from primary to high school
following the launch of the school re-entry policy. 58 volunteer mentors who comprise individuals who went through the schools within the same sub-county and are currently in careers hold monthly career talks in these schools. Sessions are held during first and second terms to inspire learners to complete school in order to have a better chance in life.
II) Examination support: Support given to class 8 candidates with writing materials and sets to enable them write their exams and rewards issued to candidates who excelled. Volunteers have also provided books and for the examination classes materials such as mathematical sets pens required to enable them sit their exams.
